Pleats please

December 12, 2016

Back in 1993, Japanese designer Issey Miyake made a dent in designers’ imaginations with his revolutionary, technology-driven Pleats Please label. Now, the great minds at Altuzarra, Boss, Victoria Beckham and Proenza Schouler, among others, are manipulating all manner of apparel into streamlined yet edgy silhouettes or creating architectural marvels that add pizzazz to once-stiff getups.
Pleats are great for fashionably hiding yourself away or showcasing your boldest, most avant-garde self. They instantly (quite literally) elevate blah monochrome ensembles — or any outfit, for that matter. Plus, they allow tons of breathing room. And even the coziest swivel chair in your office couldn’t put a wrinkle in their style. Alexa Chung and others have made quite the case for pleats, but don’t just take it from her…take it from us. This season’s tops, tunics, pants, jackets, culottes, midi skirts — heck, even bags — all have serious wardrobe-volumizing potential.

We see them on Gucci quite a bit, with multiple layers of colorful goodness, Arthur Arbesser, Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo and many more adding to the pleated fashion collections. We see side pleats appear at Jil Sander, barely there pleats spotted at 21 N, and dual tone skirts at Tod’s. Yes, it is a gorgeous look and entirely worth sifting through all the gorgeous looks this year.

Whether they have knife, accordion, or superfine crystal pleats, these precisely folded tops, bottoms, and dresses take on a sophistication that goes beyond the pleats on private-school uniforms. Such feminine detailing, with just a trace of metallics and shine, generates sexiness that has a hint of reserve. Plus, they look amazing on—or off—the dance floor. How to Wear It When worked in lightweight fabrics, pleats add volume without bulk, so figure issues are minimized. Since the focus is on movement , pair with loose separates and keep hair easy. Strappy platforms give off a cool, less girlish vibe. And yes, ironing will be murder, so factor in dry cleaning.
